Chapter Ten

DENVER IS extremely aware of Ethan pressed against his side, and he’s not missing the quick glances Ethan keeps shooting him from the corner of his eye. It’s making him hot. He keeps shifting, not moving away from Ethan but nervously wiggling in place, futzing with the blanket over their laps and studiously keeping his own gaze on the TV. Something has changed. He’d felt it during dinner, when a little imp had taken over his brain and encouraged him to say a horribly cliché line and Ethan had choked. It’s more obvious now. Ethan’s gone quiet, but he’s in Denver’s space, feeling larger than life. It could all be in Denver’s head—wishful thinking—but he’d like to think not.

Tension sizzles between them. Denver reaches for the bowl of Starbursts on the table and then plops it in his lap. Sugar is just what he needs to calm his nerves. He offers a pink one to Ethan. “You want?”

Ethan plucks it from his fingers. “Thanks. You went all out tonight, huh?”

Denver fumbles with the red Starburst he’s trying to open. The wrapper is stuck to the candy. He’s tempted to pop it in his mouth, wrapper and all, so he has an excuse not to speak. “What do you mean?” Come on, fucking unstick.

“Handmade pizza…. All this candy….” Ethan raises his eyebrows.

Denver stalls, finally clearing the candy and getting it between his teeth. He points at his mouth and shrugs, trying to look innocent. His teeth are gummed together.

“I can wait.”

Fantastic. He chews and swallows, flicking his tongue over his teeth to peel bits of Starbursts from where they’re stuck. He can choose to play dumb, or he can go the heart of the matter. Given Ethan’s directness, Denver has a good idea which one is the wisest idea. “It’s not a secret I have a crush on you,” says Denver. “Have you seen you? And now I know you, and that doesn’t help with it. So maybe this is a little more than friend-like, but I know nothing is going to happen, and I’m not going to push for anything. I understand if you feel I’m making it weird with the gestures.” He scratches his neck, hesitant and afraid to say the next words. “You’re not the only one rusty at things like this. I’m kinda going by the seat of my pants here.”

Ethan appears to be gobsmacked. He reaches out, grabbing the remote and pausing the film. The angle they’re sitting at for this conversation isn’t great, and Denver’s stomach takes a sharp dip when Ethan pulls away and resituates so he’s sitting cross-legged facing Denver. Denver rearranges himself to match. “I…,” says Ethan, and he shakes his head, rubbing a hand over his mouth and sighing. He closes his dark eyes, opens them a second later. He looks determined. “There are a lot of things I want to say… to ask too. But I’m going to try and prioritize here.”

Denver has zero clue what that means, but he nods.
